Many historians believe that political corruption was the reason for the fall of the Roman Empire. Political corruption is the decay of values and respect for the offices of government and the process of government itself. The Romans never created an effective system to choose the emperor. This system was not fair and the people did not respect it. The Praetorian Guard chose the emperor whether it was good or bad. Being a emperor for Rome was extremely dangerous because during a 100 year period Rome had 37 emperors 25 of them were removed from office by assassination. Many emperors were assassinated but some died from other causes. The emperors were in office but only for a few years.
Political corruption was partly caused because of Constantine and Diocletian. Diocletian divided the Roman Empire into two parts. The two empires were called the Eastern Empire and the Western Empire. After Diocletian was an emperor named Constantine. Constantine reunited the empire so it was one big empire again. He also moved the capitol to a city called
